Drum Works promotes engagement in learning, encourages social cohesion and develops key skills in its participants. High-quality creative sessions led by experienced professional musicians enable participants from all backgrounds and all levels of musical experience to create something they enjoy and are proud of.

We work with our partner schools to identify students who stand to benefit most from taking part, including (but not limited to) those facing challenging circumstances, those with SEND and those with demonstrable musical talent but no access to formal musical training outside the classroom. Our artist leaders build positive relationships with students, providing individual support and guidance for every participant.

There are a number of different options for schools to engage with Drum Works, ranging from one-off workshops to half-term projects to the full Drum Works programme. Download our schools information pack below for details.

What will participants learn?

All Drum Works workshops include some background about the Brazilian samba drums we play, basic drumming techniques, rhythmic work and ensemble playing. Participants will learn different drumming patterns and by the end of the session will be able to perform what they have learned.

Learning outcomes include:

• Improved rhythmic skills and an understanding of how beats are put together
• Experience of ensemble playing
• An insight into of different composition techniques and processes
• Development of transferable skills including communication, confidence, teamwork and creativity.

Workshops can be tailored to suit your needs, for example focusing on a particular genre of music, developing ensemble and performance skills or learning new composition techniques.

Who leads the workshops?

Workshops are led by professional musicians and experienced facilitators who are highly skilled at involving every student regardless of their musical ability or level of confidence.

How many students can take part?

We normally work with around 30 people at a time, but we can accommodate smaller or larger groups (our biggest group to date has been 120!).

How long are the workshops?

Workshops can last for anything from 30 minutes to a full day. We can run short workshops with several groups over the course of a day or half-day, or we can work intensively with one group for a longer period of time.

How much does it cost?

The standard prices for workshops in greater London with up to 30 participants per group are:
Half-day (up to 3 hours): £700 +VAT
plus £95 +VAT for every additional hour over 3 hours

Holiday projects could be particularly valuable for more vulnerable pupils. Our leaders are great at working with a range of needs, disabilities, and behaviours, ensuring that everyone can participate in sessions on an equal footing. Pupils will work with Drum Works leaders to learn rhythms and compose their own beats, culminating in a performance of their own work.

Holiday projects are offered with the summer holidays in mind, but we’re happy to discuss half-term or Easter holiday projects too.
